Résumé :
The Mont Saint-Michel, Tombelaine, Chausey, the Minquiers, Jersey, the Ecrehou, Sark, Guernsey, Alderney, Pelee Island, Tatihou, Saint-Marcouf… some of these islands are French, whereas others belong to the British Crown. Why and for how long? Are they all inhabited? What language is spoken there? How are they governed? What do they live on? For how many centuries have they been physically separated from the Cotentin peninsula? The answers to all of these questions and many more are provided by Edmond Thin, renowned for his many works on
Normandy’s maritime history, together with an insight into the people, the history and the most spectacular sites to be seen on these charismatic islands which form an extraordinary archipelago around the Cotentin peninsula. -
Biographie :
Through his many historical works, Edmond Thin endeavours to share his passion for maritime Normandy. Chevalier des Arts et Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Literature), member of the académie des sciences, arts et belles-lettres de Caen (Caen Academy of Science, Art and
Literature) and of the Société nationale académique de Cherbourg (Cherbourg National Academic Society), administrator of the Société d'Archéologie et d'Histoire de la Manche (Manche Archaeology and History Society), this born and bred Norman and winner of the Prix littéraire du Cotentin (Cotentin Literary Prize), is also a keen sailor who has braved for over thirty years the tumultuous waters of the Cotentin islands, be they English or Norman, and their formidable reefs. Edmond Thin is perfectly familiar, not only with each portion of coastline, each anchorage, each harbour comprising this multitude of tiny maritime worlds, but also their heaths and moorlands, their towns, manor houses, castles or fortresses, together with their islanders' very singular lifestyle, which he generously shares with us to our great delight.
