Résumé :
Finally: a proper road map of Ladakh, India. Unfortunately, there are few maps of the region, and those that are found are old and completely outdated due to the recent acceleration of roads in the Indian Himalayas. Old topographic maps are still very useful for hiking, as mountain trails do not change much. But for motorcyclists and car drivers, they are of no help.
So far, the best source for navigating Ladakh roads is online, and it's not Google Maps, for sure: it's OpenStreetMap, a collaborative project that can be found in dozens of apps such as Maps.Me or OsmAnd.
But for those who like the ease of understanding of a paper map, there is now an excellent solution, the map of Ladakh published by Himalaya Offroad. The result of months of exploration and precise on-site surveys, it accurately depicts the Ladakhi road network (as of 2023). In particular, it includes the still unfinished – but strategically important – access road via Zanskar and Shinku La.
This map obviously includes the last open passes of Umling La (5798 m) and Ke La (5387 m), but also:
- Spiti
- Kashmir
- all access roads across Himachal Pradesh: Sach Pass, Kishtwar – Killar, Shimla – Rekong Peo
The actual borders with Pakistan (LoC) and China (LaC) are correct in relation to the actual situation on the ground, which is not the case in official Indian maps.
