- Résumé : What happens when the world of theater becomes a battleground for wit and satire? In Ben Jonson's "The Poetaster, or His Arraignment," the stage is set in the vibrant and tumultuous atmosphere of early 17th-century London, a city teeming with artistic rivalry and political intrigue. This comedic play unfolds against the backdrop of the English Renaissance, a period marked by a flourishing of literature and drama, where playwrights vied for fame and recognition. Jonson, a contemporary of Shakespeare, crafts a narrative that delves into the competitive nature of the literary world, exploring themes of envy, change, and the power of words. The central plot revolves around the character of Crispinus, a thinly veiled caricature of Jonson's real-life rival, John Marston. Through a series of clever and humorous exchanges, Jonson exposes the pretensions and follies of his fellow poets, using the character of Horace, a stand-in for himself, to deliver biting critiques and defend the integrity of true art. The play is a masterful blend of comedy and commentary, where the boundaries between reality and fiction blur, and the audience is invited to witness the spectacle of literary feuds played out on stage. Jonson's work is not merely a personal vendetta; it is a reflection on the nature of creativity and the role of the artist in society. By weaving together elements of satire and farce, "The Poetaster" challenges the audience to consider the evolution of artistic expression and the responsibilities that come with it. The play's enduring appeal lies in its ability to entertain while provoking thought, offering a glimpse into the complexities of human behavior and the timeless struggle for artistic authenticity. Through its exploration of the dynamics of the theatrical world, "The Poetaster" provides readers with a lens to better understand the cultural and social currents of the time. By engaging with Jonson's sharp wit and insightful observations, we gain a deeper appreciation for the enduring power of satire and its role in shaping public discourse.
- Biographie : Benjamin Jonson (c. 11 June 1572 - c. 16 August 1637) was an English playwright and poet. Jonson's artistry exerted a lasting influence upon English poetry and stage comedy. He popularised the comedy of humours; he is best known for the satirical plays Every Man in His Humour (1598), Volpone, or The Fox (c. 1606), The Alchemist (1610) and Bartholomew Fair (1614) and for his lyric and epigrammatic poetry. He is generally regarded as the second most important English dramatist, after William Shakespeare, during the reign of James I.
