  • Résumé : "Tom Jones" by Henry Fielding is a classic novel that follows the adventures and misadventures of its eponymous hero, Tom Jones, as he navigates the complexities of 18th-century English society. Set against the backdrop of rural England, the novel traces Tom's journey from a foundling raised by a kind-hearted squire to a young man embroiled in love, scandal, and intrigue. At its heart, "Tom Jones" is a coming-of-age story that explores themes of identity, morality, and the nature of virtue. Through a series of colorful characters and lively plot twists, Fielding offers a richly detailed portrait of English life, filled with romance, humor, and social commentary. Throughout the novel, Tom grapples with his own flaws and weaknesses as he strives to do what is right in the face of temptation and adversity. Along the way, he encounters a cast of memorable characters, including the spirited Sophia Western, the scheming Blifil, and the wise and benevolent Allworthy. Fielding's masterful storytelling and keen wit make "Tom Jones" a timeless classic that continues to captivate readers with its vibrant characters, engaging plot, and insightful exploration of human nature. Through Tom's journey, Fielding invites readers to reflect on the complexities of morality and the enduring quest for love, happiness, and redemption.
  • Biographie : Henry Fielding (22 April 1707 - 8 Octr 1754) was an English novelist, irony writer, and dramatist known for earthy humour and satire. His comic novel Tom Jones is still widely appreciated. He and Samuel Richardson are seen as founders of the traditional English novel. He also holds a place in the history of law enforcement, having used his authority as a magistrate to found the Bow Street Runners, London's first intermittently funded, full-time police force.
